What is the International Summer University Program (ISUP)?

The International Summer University Program (ISUP) began in 1999 as an initiative between the International Office and a number of academic programs & faculty at Copenhagen Business School. The program had 80 participants the first year and student interest in the program has steadily risen since then, with nearly 1300 participants in 2009.

The program gives international and national students, enrolled in Bachelor or Master Degree programs at universities around the world, the possibility of completing 15 ECTS credits over the summer (equivalent to half a semester’s course load at CBS). Professionals seeking to develop their skills and enhance their knowledge in the various business fields are also encouraged to apply.

To secure a high academic standard of the courses offered, the program collaborates very closely with the study boards at Copenhagen Business School to offer courses in areas recognized by our partner universities and many others worldwide. The ISUP faculty is comprised of professors from CBS, as well as international professors from top universities around the world. Active involvement of international senior executives from Danish and multinational companies will be an integral part of many of the courses.

Who can participate in the program?

We welcome students from around the world to study undergraduate or graduate courses at the International Summer University Program. To be admitted to ISUP, students must be in good academic standing and have a minimum of two years of university studies at bachelor’s level to take an undergraduate course, and a minimum of one year of university studies at master’s level to take a graduate course. In addition, all students must have strong English skills and fulfill the prerequisites for the courses they wish to attend.

When will the International Summer University Program take place?

The International Summer University Program is a six-week intensive program that takes place from 26 June until 6 August 2010. Classes begin on Monday 28 June 2010 and run twice a week for the first five weeks of the program. The last week is reserved for written exams and submission of written projects. International students participating in the program must arrive in Copenhagen on 25 June in order to participate in the orientation meeting on Saturday 26 June and must stay until exams are finished on 6 August.

When is the deadline for applying?

For CBS students taking an elective course (valgfag): 2nd March (12 noon) - 16th March (12 noon)

Please note the change of opening date
All other students - international, Credit Transfer (merit) and Open University students (tomplads): 16th February (12 noon) - 16th March (12 noon)

How do I know what kind of student I am?

For National Students (living & studying in Denmark with a permanent residence permit or a citizenship to an EU-country):

  • CBS student – Students from CBS taking a pre-approved elective course at ISUP
  • Credit Transfer student (merit) – Students from CBS or other Danish universities with a study board approval of credit transfer
  • Vacant Place System (tomplads/Open University) – Fee paying students from CBS and other Danish universities, and professionals with interest in the courses offered

For International Students:

  • Nominated Exchange student – Students who have been nominated to participate in ISUP 2010 by a CBS partner university outside the EU/EEA
  • European Freemover (credit transfer student) – Students from a CBS partner university or other universities within the EU/EEA, who have a pre-approval of credit transfer for ISUP 2010 from their home university
  • European Freemover (fee paying student) – Students with citizenship or a permanent residence permit to an EU/EEA country, who do not have a pre-approval of credit transfer from a university
  • Non-European Freemover (fee paying student) – Students from outside the EU/EEA, who are not nominated to participate in the program by a CBS partner university

Will CBS arrange housing for me?

Yes, provided that you apply by the deadline (to be announced), then we can guarantee available housing for all our international students. Please check here for further information on location, prices etc.: Housing

Can I combine participation in ISUP with work?

The expected workload in each class is 225 student work hours. This means that students should expect to spend an average of 38 hours including participating in classes and exams on each course per week during the program. With 30 class hours this means that a lot of the workload is outside class. In addition to this, reading all assigned material may involve a large amount of group work. It is therefore not advisable that students expect to be able to work whilst participating in the program.

Can I combine participation in ISUP with travelling in Europe?

The International Summer University Program is an intensive, academic program providing students the possibility of taking courses in an international environment over the summer. Participation in ISUP is not a holiday and students are expected to be present at class sessions and be engaged in their readings and class discussions throughout the program.

As a supplement to the academic program, ISUP offers the International students various cultural and social activities in the Copenhagen area, as well as around Denmark and to nearby European cities. Expecting to do weekend travelling on top of these trips is NOT realistic. ISUP recommends that students plan other foreign travel for before or after studying with ISUP.

I have exams at my home university the first week of the program, can I arrive late?

No, this is not possible. ISUP is a very intensive program and we expect all international students to arrive in time for orientation held on 26 June 2010. Students who are not able to fulfill these criteria will not be accepted into the program. As an alternative, the ISUP Secretariat will be happy to help you by setting up a proctored exam at CBS, please contact us at summer@cbs.dk for further information.

How will I be contacted prior to program start?

After your application has been processed, we will only communicate with you via your CBS email and it will be your responsibility to check this account regularly. You will receive access to your CBS email account with your acceptance package that we will send to the address you stated in your application.

ISUP Courses

How do I select a course?

How many courses should I take?

Will all courses be taught in English?

What will my timetable look like?

How much credit will I get for participating in ISUP courses?

Can I change courses?

How do I select a course?

All courses in ISUP can be found under Prospective ISUP Students - Courses. It is important that you read the course descriptions very carefully and make sure that you fulfill the prerequisites for the courses which you wish to sign up for.

Please note that the final decision on whether the courses will run will depend on student enrollment numbers. We anticipate that we will be able to run by far the majority of the courses - the final course catalogue of the established courses will be available no later than 13th of April, 2010. The course literature and the class schedule may be subject to change.

For National Students: CBS students and other national students (merit) who wish to receive credit for the courses in their current study program must make sure they are able to receive credit for the courses that they select.

For International Students: International students who have been nominated by a partner university or European Freemovers – credit transfer students must make sure they are able to receive credit for the courses they select in their current study program, by getting a pre-approval of credit transfer from their home university.

How many courses should I take?

You can take up to two courses or 15 ECTS points during ISUP (please note that it is however not possible to take two 3-week intensive graduate courses).

For National students: National students may choose to follow one or two courses.

For CBS students: The CBS study boards for Classic CM students – CM (FIR) (HRM) (IMP) (SCM) (EMF) (FSM) (IBS) (IMM) (MIB) (SMC) (SOL) (ASC) (AEF) (MCM), Cand.merc.Aud and Cand.soc has decided that their students can only participate in ONE course during the ISUP 2010.

For International Students: All international students must enroll in two courses, unless they participate in one of the 3-week intensive graduate courses. Then participation in only one course is a possibility.

Will all courses be taught in English?

Yes, ISUP is an international summer program and students participating are expected to have a sufficient English level. We have international as well as national faculty in our program and the language used in class must be English even though the teacher is Danish and all students have a Danish background.

What will my timetable look like?

Generally, classes will take the format of two weekly class sessions of 3 hours each. Courses are normally taught on Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesdays & Thursdays. There are no classes held on Friday. There will be 5 weeks of classes and then the sixth week is when exams are administered and written projects are due.

We offer several 3-week intensive graduate courses and these classes will run from Monday – Thursday for a total of 30 hours for the first three weeks, followed by a larger written assignment for the last three weeks which is due in the exam week.

The time schedule for ISUP 2010 is available here: Time table ISUP 2010. Remember that you cannot follow courses that take place at the same time, and it is therefore very important that you check the timetable of your courses before selecting courses.

How much credit will I get for participating in ISUP courses?

One ISUP course is 7.5 ECTS and you can take up to two courses or 15 ECTS points during ISUP.

For International Students: Each ISUP course is worth 7.5 ECTS credits and all international students are required to enroll in two courses, which is equal to 15 ECTS or half a semester's full course load at CBS. ISUP is not able to decide how many credits a course is worth in your home university's academic program, and it is therefore up to your university to evaluate how many credits you will receive.

Can I change courses?

For National Students: Under special circumstances, you may have the possibility of changing courses during the first two and a half day of ISUP (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until 12 noon). It will only be possible for you to change courses if you fulfill the course prerequisites and if the course is still open for enrollment. Students who receive credit for their participation in the program have to proof that they can also get credit for the new course.

For International Students: Under special circumstances, you may have the possibility of changing courses during the first two and a half days of ISUP (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until 12 noon). It will only be possible for you to change courses if you fulfill the course prerequisites and if the course is still open for enrollment. It is your responsibility to make sure that your new course is approved for credit transfer to your home university. European Freemovers must provide documentation of the approved transfer before requesting a course change if wishing to attend ISUP at no cost.

Course Literature

Do I need to do any reading before the course begins?

Do I need to buy literature and text books for all my courses?

Where and when can I buy the literature for my courses?

Do I need to do any reading before the course begins?

The work load in ISUP is 225 student work hours per course and this includes participating in classes, course reading, group work and exams/written projects. This means that a large portion of the learning process in our courses is outside of class, so students should be prepared to spend plenty of time reading before ISUP and during the program.

The course literature and reading lists will be available in May 2010. We suggest that you start reading before hand to give you an advantage before you start the program. During the program it will be very difficult to catch up if you fall behind on the readings. Due to the intensive nature of our Summer University there is very little time to prepare for exams, as classes end Thursday July 29 2010 and exam week begins August 2 2010.

Do I need to buy literature and text books for all my courses?

To obtain the optimum learning experience from each course, it is essential to do all required reading as well as attend all of the class sessions. Even though a copy of the required literature for each course will be available in the CBS library, you will be sharing this resource with many other students and cannot rely that it will always be available to you. Therefore, we advise students to buy the required text(s) and use the CBS Library for supplementary reading. Please note that some ISUP exams are open book, and the sharing of textbooks during an exam is strictly prohibited.

Where and when can I buy the literature for my courses?

The CBS bookstore "Samfundslitteratur" will carry all required books as well as compendiums and course packs for ISUP courses. The books and compendiums will be on sale from the beginning of June.

Note: Books which are written by the same author that hold the same title may vary in content from Europe, USA and Asia. Courses in ISUP will always use the European version where applicable.
