A Path to Developing More Insightful Business School Graduates:  A Systems-Based, Experiential Approach to Integrating Law, Strategy and Sustainability

Professor Constance Bagley, Senior Research Fellow, Yale University

This talk offers an open systems and experiential approach to developing more insightful, socially responsible and effective managers by replacing the siloed and profit-maximization approach often used by business schools with an integrated curriculum that requires students to grapple with the complexities, ambiguities, and trade-offs inherent in managing in today’s increasingly resource-constrained world. Instead of training students to focus primarily on maximizing shareholder value, often without due regard for the effects of a firm’s activities on other stakeholders and the Earth’s ability to sustain diverse life, educators should help their students learn how to think more critically about the interrelated physical, biological, economic, legal, ethical, societal, and planetary systems that comprise our world. More specifically, business schools should be encouraged to seize the transdisciplinary opportunities embedded in the accreditation standards by more tightly integrating law, strategy, and sustainability into an open systems approach to management education. Suggestions for experiential learning techniques that provide more opportunities for business students to practice exercising the informed judgment essential for mastery of the science, craft, and art of responsible and effective management.
