The Chinese State, Private Business, and the Strange Politics of Associations in Beijing

By  Jonathan Unger, Professor and Director of the Contemporary China Centre at the Australian National University, publisher of more than a dozen books about China, and editor of The China Journal 1987-2005

ABSTRACT:

What is the relationship between the Chinese Party-state and the private business community? How has it changed during the past decade and a half? What is the government’s stance then and now toward small, medium-sized, and large businesses? How do the government’s policies get expressed through its relationship with the business associations that have been the designated representatives for these three business constituencies? Professor Jon Unger examines these questions by way of research that he conducted in Beijing during the first half of the 1990s and then again in recent years. The changes that he discovered in the mid-2000s were totally unexpected—and have implications for the development in China of state corporatism or, alternatively, civil society.

This seminar is co-arranged with the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies and is a part of the seminar series 'Challenges to Communist Party Rule in China'.
