The new professionals

Does a doctor always wear a medical scrub? And does an MA always teach high school?

The job market for people with mid-length and higher education is changing rapidly. Who are the new professionals working under these conditions?

They are doctors, teachers, graduates of Masters Programmes, officers, nurses, lawyers and economists, journalists and engineers. According to cultural myths a doctor wears a scrub and works in a hospital environment. An MA teaches high school or works in a museum. But these myths are turning out to be less true.

“Few people get to work in the environments that are dominated by their profession” Professor Bøje Larsen explains. “They have to participate in interdisciplinary collaborations and learn to understand other professions and their area of expertise. Many do not get to work in their “field”. The journalist may work in the Department of Communications, the MA may work in the Human Resources Department, etc.”

The book reveals five new demands on the new professionals. It is published by DJØF and is edited by Professor Bøje Larsen and PhD Helle Hedegaard Hein (Center for Business Development and Management).
