Steffen Smidt as chief negotiator
Adjunct professor appointed chief negotiator at the COP15 climate change conference
Steffen Smidt has been appointed the Ministry of Climate and Energy’s chief negotiator at the COP15.
Since 2005, he has been adjunct professor in European integration and international political economics at the CBS International Center for Business and Politics.
From 2006-2007, he was Danish ambassador to the OECD and UNESCO and since 2008, he has been the Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative as regards climate issues.
Experienced diplomat
The Minister for Climate and Energy Connie Hedegaard considers Steffen Smidt one of Denmark's most experienced diplomats.
He has had a long career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and at the European Commission in Brussels.
Steffen Smidt has been embassy secretary at the Permanent Representation of Denmark to the EC in Brussels, secretary to the Foreign Minister, counsellor of embassy at Permanent Representation of Denmark in Brussels, counsellor of embassy at the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the UN in New York, deputy director general at the European Commission and from 1993 to 2003 director general at the European Commission in various areas.
