Inaugural Lecture by Adjunct Professor Daniel Birnbaum at MPP
“When Philosophy meets Museum - on Jean François Lyotard´s curating enterprise ‘Les Immatériaux’ at Centre Pompidou”
Daniel Birnbaum explores how the father of postmodern philosophy Jean-Francois Lyotard opted to “do philosophy” by curating a legendary art show at Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1985: “Les immateriaux”. The curating of this show is an ideal type-case for analyzing how art and philosophy interact in the organizing of a high-impact exhibition-enterprise, which is remembered and interpreted long after the show has taken place. Understanding the work of curating therefore gives fresh insights into aesthetic entrepreneurship and leadership. With a long experience as philosopher and art critic, manager of art Institutions and art schools in addition to being himself an internationally highly visible curator, Daniel Birnbaum will introduce the curatorial as a new field for management and organizational research.
This inaugural lecture manifests the launch of the CBS Art Initiative, which will strengthen the links between CBS and the national and international art scene and stimulate CBS’ research and education in “the age of aesthetic innovation”.
