Seminar with Ulrich Brand: State, context and correspondence: Policy analysis in historical materialism's research program
State, context and correspondence: Policy analysis in historical materialism’s research program
In the article “State, context and correspondence. Contours of a historical-materialist policy analysis”, (Österreichische Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft, 42:4 (2013), 425-442) Ulrich Brand engages in a critical theoretical discussion with policy analysis through a dual critique. On one hand against the overly functionalist approach to policy analysis found in much state theory, and on the other hand against simplified and un-contextualized understandings of the state found in much policy analysis. This opens a productive field for contextualized policy studies and a richer and more nuanced state theory. In the seminar Brand will present and discuss this intervention.
Ulrich Brand is Professor of Political Science at University of Vienna. Brand has made important contributions to critical state theory and its application to global environmental governance and political ecology, for instance with the articles “Crisis and continuity of capitalist society-nature relationships: The imperial mode of living and the limits to environmental governance”, in Review of International Political Economy, 20 (4) 2013; “Sustainable development and ecological modernization – the limits to a hegemonic policy knowledge”, Innovation. The European Journal of Social Science Research, Vol. 23(2) 2010; Brand, Ulrich/Alice Vadrot “Epistemic selectivities of international biodiversity politics”, Law, Environment and Development Journal 9(2) 2013; Brand, Ulrich/Christoph Görg/Markus Wissen, “Second-order Condensations of Societal Power Relations”, Antipode, Vol. 43(1) 2011; and the jointly written book Brand, Görg, Hirsch and Wissen, Conflicts in Global Environmental Regulation and the Internationalization of the State.
