Public Lecture by Professor Charles Bosk, University of Pennsylvania

In this public lecture, Professor of Medical Sociology Charles Bosk will discuss the tension between a professional perspective on medical error that was dominant in the 1970’s and the managerial perspective dominant today. He will focus on why efforts utilizing the managerial perspective have increased risk and error rather than reduced them.

Charles Bosk’s ethnographic research focuses on the culture of medicine and in particular on how health care professionals make sense of and regulate risk and error. Bosk’s work covers themes such as safety and risk management, bioethics, research ethics and the rise and fall of health care problems in the public arena. He is the author of several books including Forgive and Remember: Managing Medical Failure (University of Chicago Press 1979) and What would you do? Juggling Bioethics and Ethnography (University of Chicago Press 2008).

The event will be chaired by Assistant Professor Kirstine Zinck Pedersen (Department of Organization). It is hosted by CBS Public-Private Health Cluster and the Velux Foundation project ‘Office as a Vocation’.
