PhD defence: Søren Bering

The last decades increasing globalization has put increasing pressure on manufacturing firms’ profits while industries further down the value chain, like services, have seen increasing growth. This has tempted many manufacturing firms to embark on a strategy of forward integration into distribution and services hereby substituting market transaction with hierarchical governance. At the same time we also see the very same forward integrated manufacturing firms displaying very different growth and financial performance. This thesis inquiries into manufacturing firms’ downstream value chain extension and the subsequent governance of integrated distribution and services activities. Of particular focus are internal structures, delegation, monitoring and incentive systems for control and entrepreneurial innovation.
