PhD defence: Catarina Pessanha Gomes
This thesis connects the history and philosophy of ideas with organizational practices of contemporary social movements. It examines the historical and epistemological significance of Romanticism as a cultural movement providing activists with resources to legitimate aesthetic and imaginative types of prefigurative practices. The French social movement Nuit Debout and its occupation of public space is studied as an illustrative example of how the prefiguration of another, different world combines artistic and symbolic interventions as well as forms of organizing practices and political representation.
