PhD defence: Anirudh Agrawal
Access to finance at a 'fair price' is one of the significant issues in many economies. Impact investing is emerging as one of the promising financial instruments aimed at making the financial system more inclusive and address social, environmental, and governance issues. While previous studies on impact-investing have explored the definitional and conceptual issues, I study the operational issues related to impact investing. Through multiple interviews of social entrepreneurs, impact investors, and extensive literature review, I explore investment strategies of impact investors and suggest that impact-investing firms' success is tied to the success of their investee social enterprises. Among the many findings, I suggest that social sectors ( like industrial sectors) should be further contextualized and that depending on antecedents and institutional contexts, the impact-investing strategies may vary.
