PhD defence: Kasper Ingeman Beck

Despite a large and vibrant private sector developed through the last decades of market reforms in China, the state continues to exercise significant influence over the Chinese economy. With four studies of the reforms, ownership and corporate governance of the Chinese state sector, this dissertation contributes to a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding of the nature and governance of contemporary Chinese state-owned enterprises. The dissertation documents the emergence of “Party-led state capitalism” - a form of hybrid political market economy blending planning and market modes of economic coordination, as well as public and private modes of ownership.
