Despite the bitter controversies that surrounded his term of office between 2017 and 2021, Donald Trump may be on the threshold of regaining the presidency. Kamala Harris only won her party’s candidacy in August after President Biden was edged out by fearful members of Congress.

To say the 2024 presidential election is unusual or exceptional would be an understatement.

How has the US come to this? What explains Trump’s comeback and his astonishing political resilience? And what of J D Vance, the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, who could well be just a heartbeat away from the presidency? And why are the Democrats, who can boast of reasonable economic indicators, struggling to construct a convincing lead?

The election is way too close to call. There is even a chance that the Democrats might, as in 2000 and 2016, win a majority of votes amongst the voting public but lose the White House. In the aftermath, legal fights and disorder seem probable.

This talk looks at the issues and seeks to explain why Donald Trump has proved to be a commanding political figure. It considers the mark that Trump has made, and will (whatever happens) continue to make on US politics, Europe and the wider world.

Eddie Ashbee is professor MSO and directs the MSc in Public Management and Social Development at the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research and is the author of a recently published study of “deglobalization”.
