Institut for Organisation
My research focuses on professional knowledge and practice and how organizational “backstage” processes shape encounters with citizens (clients) and stakeholders.
My article in Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory (2021) uses ethnographic data from child protection agencies to theorize the role of deliberation and collective decision-making in frontline work and develop the concept of deliberative organizational routines. My articles in Perspectives on Public Management and Governance are concerned with professional discretion, focusing on the nature of professional knowledge (2022a) and the bureaucratic ethos (2022b).
My articles in the Journal of Professions and Organization examine professional struggles over knowledge and legitimacy related to the ideal of evidence-based practice in social work and health care contexts (2019, 2021). My article in Review of Personnel Administration (2023) explores how frontline managers can support sound decision-making and alleviate emotional strain for frontline professionals by enacting street-level leadership.
My current research project (REPLACE), funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF), explores how digital government reshapes the nature of frontline work and public bureaucracies, and is based on extensive organizational ethnography in the Tax Agency and the Agricultural Agency.

I have supervised 15 graduate students on their Master theses and been the supervisor of eight BA theses, including both individual and group-based projects. I am particularly interested in supervising projects that fall within my primary research areas (see above) and/or make use of ethnography.
I have extensive teaching experience and have taught more than 17 courses on all levels: Undergraduate, Graduate, and PhD courses as well as Executive Level Programs for public managers. My teaching generally falls within the areas of Public Management and Governance, Frontline Work and Professionalism, Organization Theory, and Organizational Analysis. I also teach both introductory and advanced courses in Qualitative Methods, including Organizational Ethnography.
Examples of previous courses include the graduate level courses “Public Organization and Leadership” and “Evidence-Based Policy and Practice” (University of Copenhagen), the BA seminar “Inside Public Organizations”, the graduate course “Frontline Work: Profession, Policy, and Practice”, the PhD course “Political and Organizational Ethnography”, and the executive level course “Leadership of Frontline Professionals” (all at Aarhus University).
I am currently teaching in the Master of Public Governance executive program.
