Alexander har en ph.d. fra Melbourne University i Melbourne, Australien. Alexander er professor og direktør for Center for Tourism and Culture Management, Copenhagen Business School.

Hans forskning fokuserer på forbruger/turistadfærd og på stram strategi og skabelse af konkurrencemæssige fordele. Han har publiceret om disse emner i de mest prestigefyldte internationale tidsskrifter inden for marketing og turisme (fx Journal of Marketing) og turismejournaler (fx Journal of Travel Research og Annals of Tourism Research), og han er også forfatter til en af ​​de førende lærebøger om global markedsføringsledelse. Alexander har vundet adskillige nationale (Tietgens guldmedalje) og internationale priser (fx Goeldners Award of Excellence).
