PhD Defense: Christina Juhlin

Fredag, 20 september, 2024 - 14:00 to 16:00

Christina Juhlin

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Christina Juhlin has submitted her thesis entitled:

Management of the Meantime: The senses, attachments, and time in the aesthetic city

The thesis studies the aestheticization of the city through temporary use of space and culture, a strategy also known as temporary urbanism. Studies of temporary urbanism either celebrate it as an alternative to neoliberal urban development or point to its complicit role in such development. This thesis draws on organization studies of time and affect to instead show how the temporary works as a pervasive temporal order that reorganizes how we feel about, attach to and engage in the places in which we live or work. The findings extend beyond the case study of urban transformation in a post-industrial site in Copenhagen (Refshaleøen) to the politics of time management in the aesthetic economy and in temporary forms of organizing and working. Across four research papers, the thesis develops a conceptual framework with which to understand this relation between time, place attachments, and politics.

The thesis will be available from research.cbs.dk
