PhD Defense: Chiara Andreoli
In order to obtain the PhD degree, Chiara Andreoli has submitted her thesis entitled:
Bridging Profit and Purpose: Tensions in Impact Measurement and Management in Impact Investing
This doctoral dissertation examines the development and implementation of impact measurement and management (IMM) practices in impact investing. By adopting a practice-centered approach, the four articles analyze the key tensions practitioners face in the IMM process as they seek to augment social and environmental impact alongside financial returns. Through in-depth qualitative studies, this dissertation advances knowledge on impact materiality, power dynamics, impact commensuration, and stakeholder engagement. It deepens the theoretical understanding of the complexities in the IMM decision-making process, challenging the notion that these tensions arise solely from intentional stakeholder antagonism. Instead, it highlights the intrinsic challenges of reconciling diverse meanings, demands, and actions in the IMM process in the nascent field of impact investing, and it provides novel insights into how practitioners can better integrate impact considerations into business decision-making.
