European Satellite Cultures Conference

Transformations of territorial and symbolic power

Thursday, May 4, 2006 - 10:00 to Friday, May 5, 2006 - 19:00

Whereas the Internet has been part of public debates since the mid nineties, satellites, which provide the backbones of today’s global media infrastructure, figure low on the agenda of international governance, national politics and media research.

Five panels address the themes:

  • Satellite Industry and the Digital Age

  • News Media and Satellite Delivery: Towards a New Global Proximity?

  • Diversity and Diasporic Communities: the Arab Case

  • New Spaces of Democracy

  • Governance of Global Information Flows

The conference brings together leading international academics, key policy makers and industry representatives with a view to setting off a much-needed dialogue on the satellite challenges that Europe faces today.

Including speakers from UNESCO, INTELSAT, BBC, Al Jazeera, London School of Economics and University of Geneva.
