Program Content

Leadership is a timeless phenomenon—and so is our fascination with it. Modern leadership "tales" of heroic CEOs, like the epics of ancient times, extol the virtues of "great leaders" and praise their deeds. These glossy stories are inspirational and often laudatory, and their popularity shows how much we like to look at
leadership as an action—something leaders do to followers. Surely, leading requires the capacity to act—providing direction, mobilising others, and controlling progress. However, action alone is not enough. In this seminar, we shall look at
leadership as a reflection of followers’ needs and desires—something followers do to leaders.

Leaders often represent complex constituencies, and their positions, as well as their actions, are the result of multiple pressures and demands. Working with, instead of being used by, these forces, is not easy. It requires the awareness to grasp the subtle behavioural dynamics occurring in groups, organizations, and larger cultures; the capacity to make sense of how these dynamics affect our emotional world, and; the sensitivity to offer "containment" for the inevitable tensions that collective life entails. This inner work, albeit not glamorous, is the necessary foundation to exercise leadership effectively and responsibly—without losing oneself in it.
