"Inclusion, marginalization and exclusion on the labor market: theoretical reflections and empirical results."

Abstract: For many years, I have been researching on labour market issues. One of the central themes within this field is inclusion/exclusion vis a vis the labour market also called integration into the labour market.

One day, I started looking at the concept of integration – an old and most important question for many areas of the social sciences. In my presentation I shall shortly go through some of the most important contributions (Marx, Smith, Spencer, Durkheim, Parsons, Lockwood, Giddens, etc.).

I end up with a hybrid of an adapted Luhmann and Bourdieu as the most fruitful way of understanding individuals’ and groups’ larger or smaller degree of inclusion/exclusion not only into the labour market but also into other systems.

The fruitfulness of the approach will be illustrated by data from a comprehensive empirical survey where the Nordic and the EU policy of societal integration via labour market inclusion is questioned.
