Seminar: Asking the Question: What is Listening - Philosophically, musically, professionally?

This year CAL will be launching five international seminars focusing on the 5 senses. The ambition is then to investigate the different senses during 2009. The first seminar should be in March 2009 and the theme will be "Listening”

Thursday, March 5, 2009 - 15:30 to 19:30

Listening; philosophically - musically - professionally

Man is by nature very attentive - otherwise mankind would not have survived. Today we experience a complex and demanding flow of sense impressions and incentives from our surroundings which may result in a situation of conflict between our senses. This conflict tends to produce a momental mutual exclusion of our sense functions which however need to be reciprocally reinforced and supportive in order to maintain a clear and concise understanding of reality.

The eye vision is the strongest sense. The strength of the vision becomes problematic when it blocks the ear and the capacity to listen. The pressure of the eye makes it hard if not impossible to listen. But he who cannot listen cannot think. And he who cannot think cannot communicate and he who cannot communicate cannot lead.

We will deal with the infinite possibilities inherent in the ability to listen to what is the really relevant. Musicians and music-radio hosts are professional listeners. But how do they listen? Managers should be champions in the art of feeling any shift in the voice of the other and of hearing what he actually says. This requires a sense of, or feeling for, the event, and ethical imagination. To think is to listen to ones own voice. The philosopher should know this. We will investigate these abilities.

Musician Karen Humle, former radio host Per Wium, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek manager Flemming Friborg and philosopher Ole Fogh Kirkeby, will each highlight the mystery of listening.

Seminar fee: 300 DKr (reduced fee for students)
