Revolution and Race: Interracial Couples in Contemporary Cuba

Thursday, April 7, 2011 - 13:30 to 15:00

Nadine T. Fernandez, PhD, SUNY Empire State College, Revolution and Race: Interracial Couples in Contemporary Cuba

Nadine T. Fernandez will discuss her new book ‘Revolutionizing Romance: Interracial Couples in Contemporary Cuba’ (Rutgers University Press 2010) which is an ethnographic account of the continuing significance of race in Cuba as it is experienced in interracial relationships. Her anthropological study tracks young couples as they move in a world fraught with shifting connections of class, race and culture. Her analysis situates processes of mestizaje in particular historical contexts, examining generational differences between interracial couples formed at the start of the revolution and those formed during the 1990’s Special Period.
