The field of computational linguistics has always straddled multiple

fields, with roots in theoretical linguistics and artificial

intelligence. Since the early 90's the field has been transformed by

an emphasis on data-driven approaches, most notably machine

translation. In this talk I will sketch some of the main recent

developments in both theoretical and computational approaches to

linguistics from the perspective of my own research interests. I will

then offer some speculations on the relevance of these developments to

research directions at ITM, in particular with respect to the analysis

of textual data in social media
