Alternative Globalizations: Challenges for the Business Environment

Guest Lecture by Professor Grahame Thompson arranged by International Center for Business and Politics.

Globalization is a heavily contested concept and there are several alternative claims to say what it amounts to. The first part of this presentation assesses these claims before moving on to consider the ones that most centrally impinge upon the business environment. In doing this the argument is that we should still remain sceptical about even the more serious of these claims. This relates to the second part of the presentation where the structural limitations to the idea of a truly global international economic system are stressed, and the governance implications of these limitations identified.

Tuesday April 29th 2008 from 15.00 to 17.00

Global Citizenship: Corporate Activity in Context

Guest Lecture by Professor Grahame Thompson arranged by International Center for Business and Politics.

Many formulations of contemporary globalization suggest that citizenship is being radically transformed by processes of transnationalism. And the business world is reacting to this sense of change by firms claiming to be global corporate citizens. But what exactly does global corporate citizenship mean and what are its implications? In this presentation a preliminary response is made to these questions by situating corporate citizenship within the wider framework of constitutional debates about private economic law and the juridicalization of the international sphere more generally.
