Cohen will discuss some of the major themes of his forthcoming book Duke Ellington's America (University of Chicago Press, 2008), which assesses Ellington's significance as a figure in American history. Themes will include Ellington's status as a race leader, his approach to business and marketing, his struggles against nostalgia during the 1960s, and more. This presentation will include rare and commercially unavailable interviews, broadcasts and concerts taken from the Jerry Valburn and Voice of America collections at the Library of Congress.
