Seminar with Milton Cox arranged by Learning Lab.

Learning Lab has invited Milton Cox from Miami University. He will discuss the building of faculty learning communities and present some case stories.

Milton D. Cox is Director of the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at Miami University, where he founded and directs the National Lilly Conference on College Teaching. He is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, and facilitates the Hesburgh Award-winning Teaching Scholars faculty learning community. Milton also is project director of a FIPSE grant establishing faculty learning community programs on other campuses and is co-editor of the book Building Faculty Learning Communities. He incorporates the use of student learning portfolios and Howard Gardner's concept of multiple intelligences in his mathematics classes.

He is recipient of the C.C. MacDuffee Award for distinguished service to Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary, and a certificate of special achievement from the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education in recognition and appreciation of notable contributions to the profession of faculty, instructional, and organizational development.

On the website http://www.units.muohio.edu/flc/index.shtml faculty learning community (FLC) is described as “… a group of trans-disciplinary faculty, graduate students and professional staff group of size 6-15 or more (8 to 12 is the recommended size) engaging in an active, collaborative, yearlong program with a curriculum about enhancing teaching and learning and with frequent seminars and activities that provide learning, development, transdisciplinarity, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and community building.”
