Gonzalo Abad-Ortiz, The Current Political Situation in Latin America. (in English)

The past decade (from 1999-2009) has been marked by a strong left turn in Latin, and especially, South American politics. However at the moment, the political situation in the region seems to become still more complex. A main figure of the moderate left, president Lula da Silva (Brazil), is not seeking another term; in Chile, the center-left coalition has lost power and in Venezuela, president Hugo Chávez seems to be facing increasing economic and political difficulties, while Raúl Castro's government in Cuba seems to be losing part of its initial good-will due to accusations of violation of human rights.

Gonzalo Abad-Ortiz is a sociologist and trained in International Relations and Development Studies. Serving with UNESCO in the period 1984-2007 (Caracas, Mexico City, Paris), he is presently Senior Adviser to UNESCO in the field of social sciences. He is also a lecturer at Ecole Nationale de Sciences Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris.

The lecture is organised in cooperation with the Danish Institute of Human Rights.
