jointly host two lectures on

Scandinavian immigrants in the USA.

Jørn Brøndal (University of Southern Denmark)
Ethnicity and Politics: Scandinavian Americans and the Progressive Movement, 1890 - 1914.

Jørn Brøndal has an MA in History and American Studies and a PhD in American History from the University of Copenhagen. He is an Associate Professor of History at the Center of American Studies at the Universtity of Southern Denmark in Odense and the Chairman of the Danish Association for American Studies (DAAS) (since 2005). Jørn Brøndal received the Wisconsin Historical Society Book Award of Merit in 2005 for his book
Ethnic Leadership and Midwestern Politics (2004).

The Ideal American: Jacob A. Riis and his work - an illustrated lecture.

Tom Buk-Swienty has an MA in History and American Studies and is an Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism, after many years as the US-correspondent at the weekly newspaper. His recently published and much praised book,
Den ideelle amerikaner, is the first full biography of the legendary Danish-American journalist, social reformist and documentarian, Jacob August Riis. Tom Buk-Swienty will tell the dramatic story about this fascinating Danish immigrant and show some of his most famous photographs.
