An oratorio as an organisational building process

The building up of an oratorical concert is demonstrated as an organisational case study. The rehearsal becomes the creation of the organisation. The scored music's rituals and methods of rehearsal create a field of interaction and innovation despite the formalistic approach.

Around 25 singers, conductor and a pianist will both investigate the mutual interests and vision of the piece's potential as well as embody the creation of the ensemble before the culmination planned three days later.

The session is lead by Peter Hanke, and in planned timeouts Helle Hedegaard Hein and Ole Fogh Kirkebywill reflect on the events unfolding and the musicians are at hand for interaction and reflection with the participants who are merged with the ensemble setup.

The session will be divided into two significant parts:

15.00-16.15

Understanding the nature of the ensemble as an organisation from the raw canvas, as this particular combination of musicians have not worked together before. A sculptural shaping with the music as the tool will show the methods.

16.30-18.00

Exploring expressions based on the growing mutual experience and trust. Roles of leadership, formal as well as informal will be case studied - Iteration as improvement methods as well as radical changes are embedded in the music making process and the idea of constant aesthetic progress.

Voces Academy’s profile:

Performance, demonstrations and documentation

Voces Academy underlines the performative aspects of music making. Both rehearsals and performances are used for the environment of interest beyond entertainment – and not only the audience in the concert producing understanding.

Conventional concert presentations are embedded in workshops, where the tacit knowledge about music making processes are demonstrated and documented. In this area the ensemble invents new ways of interaction like Artists in Residence projects in organisations outside the traditional understanding of the cultural sector.

Knowledge based music making

Varied working methods are given higher priority than repertoire unity. Knowledge based events are focused rather than delivering amusing concerts. Often the ensemble collaborates with Exart Performances and Centre for Art & Leadership.

Goals

  • As an ensemble Voces Academy aims at the highest artistic level in performance, recordings and workshops.

  • Voces Academy wishes to give ensemble based vocal music greater power in the Danish professional music life.

  • Voces Academy wants to participate in a renewal of the use of classical music in society.

  • Voces Academy wants to develop an international benchmark for knowledge based music making.

Voces Academy is managed by Exart Performances and Peter Hanke www.exart.org and www.voces.dk
