The Dynamics of Migration

Cross-Border Movements between Central America and the US Seminar at the Center for the Study of the Americas

Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 13:00 to 17:00

Cross-Border Movements between Central America and the US Seminar at the Center for the Study of the Americas.

Migration is one of the important themes on the international political agenda. The Mexican-US border is among the busiest in the world. The scale of Latino immigration has significant socioeconomic consequences for the US and has triggered a far-reaching public policy debate in Washington DC and the states. However, although commentaries have emphasised the impact of immigration on the US, immigration is also leading to profound changes in Mexico and the other countries of Latin America. The seminar will consider developments in both South and North America so as to offer a comprehensive picture of the migration process.

Speakers:

Nancy Foner (City University of New York), Engagements across National Borders, Then and Now.

Silvia Gioguli Saucedo (Colegio de México), The Challenges of International Migration to the U.S. from the Mexican Perspective.

Anne Magnussen (University of Southern Denmark), Narratives about the Past in the American Southwest.

Ken Henriksen (University of Aarhus), Textual Representations of the Border and Border-crossers. Constructing Latino Enemies in U.S. Newspapers.

Mario Velázquez (Colegio de Sonora), Latino Social Movements.
