"Noisy Management - A History of Danish School Governing from 1970-2010"

In order to obtain the PhD degree Justine Grønbæk Pors has submitted her PhD thesis.

Since the late 1980’s, more and better management has been considered an effective solution to a range of problems in the public sector. However, this thesis proposes that governmental attempts to increase management capacity of welfare institutions are entangled to an accelerating production of ungovernability.

The thesis analyses the strategies deployed over time by Danish municipalities to create a self-governing public school and explores how management reforms do not only produce orderly and efficient welfare institutions, but also create an ever more importunate fantasy of unmanageable noise.
