The Vietnam War and Hollywood
Niels Bjerre-Poulsen, together with a handful of other figures, will be introducing Michael Ciminos’ The Deer Hunter when it repremiers on February 2nd –8th with six screenings in Imperial in Copenhagen.
“I will be talking about the fact that “The Deer Hunter” and later “Apocalypse Now” broke Hollywood’s resistance to dealing with the Vietnam War directly in movies. John Wayne’s patriotic “The Green Barrettes” had shown what a delicate issue the war was in a divided nation. It took another ten years before Hollywood dared making a movie about the war. I will also be talking about the way the war made its way into Westerns even earlier, and they were never quite the same again. And of course I will be talking about some of the issues of tension that characterize “The Deer Hunter’s” version of the war”, Niels Bjerre-Poulsen explains.
