Teaching Knowledge at CBS: a forum for exchange and ideas and experiences

CBS Learning Lab miniSeminars

Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - 13:00 to 15:00

CBS Learning Lab miniSeminars.

In March 2007 Eva Boxenbaum and Koen Heimeriks received the FUHU teaching wards for Excellence in Teaching and For Knowledge Dissemination. At the miniSeminar they present their teaching methods and ideas.

Eva Boxenbaum is Assistant Professor in the Department of Organization. She received the FUHU award for teaching Organizational Behavior in B.Sc. International Business and Research Methods in M.Sc. Creative Business Processes:

Real-Time Case S(t)imulation”

This presentation discusses the benefits and drawbacks of using real time cases. I share my own experience with constructing courses so that they s(t)imulate problem-solving in private and public organizations. The basic idea is that students acquire theory and analytical skills as they proceed to solve real-time problems and then present their theoretically informed solutions in a professional format targeted to specific audiences. To enrich the learning process, I used semi-complete curricula, relevant company representatives, novel internet technologies (web 2.0), and simulated international conferences. Some features worked better than others, but they all provide input to discuss the relative (dis-)advantages of using real-time cases and process-oriented teaching.

Koen Heimeriks is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at the Center for Strategic Management & Globalization. He received the FUHU Award 2007 for his ability to – by using multiple teaching approaches – integrate theory and practice in various courses at the Masters and PhD level:

"
Don't Mention the Dirty Word! On Using Theory and Practice in the Classroom"

While sometimes academic teaching is perceived as abstract or disconnected from 'the real world' (and similarly management practice as void of rigorousness), my teaching efforts have been directed at blending both. Instead of treating theory and practice as distinct, I have deliberately tried to unify rigor and relevance using case study and research based teaching, interactive group sessions, constructive and direct feedback as well as some of my consulting experience. Students are challenged to analyze demanding case studies and thereupon apply complex academic readings. In this way, synthesizing both theory and practice is done to enrich student understanding of practical problems in a theoretical and analytical way, while simultaneously allowing them to experience theoretical issues in a more practical and accessible fashion.

Teaching Knowledge at CBS: a forum for exchange and ideas and experiences

CBS Learning Lab hosts miniSeminars for teachers at CBS. Each seminar presents examples of "innovative practice" from a programme/course at CBS. The seminar presenters are teachers at CBS, who will discuss and share their own pedagogical experiences from teaching, use of ICT may be included.

The seminars are held 2 or 3 times per semester and will take no longer than 2 hours.
