Global Human Resource Management: Myths and Realities

SMG Business Seminar

Monday, September 3, 2007 - 09:00 to 10:30

Invitation for SMG Business Seminar.

The globalization of business inspired HRM scholars to address issues associated with how human resources are managed in the global

environment. HRM practices - probably more than others - are subject to dual pressures for local adaptation and internal consistency. Yet, the

strategic requirements for internal consistency and local sensitivity are often contradictory. In sum, global HRM faces a major challenge: how

to be responsible to and effective in the local environment, yet act in co-ordinated fashion with the rest of the MNC?

The discussion will be carried out from both an academic and practitioners perspective. Representing the academics Professor Patrick Wright (Cornell University) presents the outcomes of a unique and exciting project looking at HR excellence in MNCs, carried out during 2004-2006 globally. The purpose of his presentation is to facilitate the dialogue and thus advance perspectives on global HRM, whether in the form of general theorizing about the topic or specific theory and research focused exclusively on global issues. Discussing HRM issues from practitioners perspective senior HR managers of the leading Danish MNCs present their global HRM challenges. Their presentations challenge the issue of generalizability of the global HRM, question the boundaries of the theories which exist due to the differing

context surrounding HR in different countries.
