HA JIN

Ha Jin is one of the most acclaimed and admired American writers of the past twenty years. Born in China in 1956 he came to the United States in 1984 in order to write a doctoral dissertation on English literature. After the events of Tiananmen Square in the spring of 1989 he decided not to return to China. Over the next ten years, under the pen-name of Ha Jin, he published, in English, two novels, two collections of short stories and two volumes of poetry. The second volume of stories, Under the Red Flag (1997), won the prestigious Flannery O’Connor Award; his second novel, Waiting (1999), won both the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Prize for Fiction. He has since published a further three novels, The Crazed (2002), War Trash (2004) and A Free Life (2007). He is currently Professor of English at Boston University.
