The EU's 'External Action' according to the Lisbon Treaty: Explaining the Institutional Choices

Does Europe need a joined foreign policy? What is the role of Catherine Ashton as the High Representative? And why has this position been established by the Lisbon treaty?! In recent years Finn Laursen’s research has focused upon European integration, especially the bid decisions concerning the EU Treaties. Their reform as well as successive enlargements of the EU and the role played by the EU in the global system has marked his latest publications. Finn Laursen will present findings of his most recent publication on the EU External Action Service and clarify the connection between the EEAS and the Lisbon Treaty.

Finn Laursen holds the Canada Research Chair in European Union (EU) Studies at the Dalhousie Arts and Social Sciences Faculty and is Professor in the Department of Political Science. He received his university education at Aarhus University, Denmark (MA) and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA (PhD). During his academic career, he has worked and collaborated with universities all over Denmark as well as in London, Maastricht, and Japan.
