Behavioural Insights and Radical Innovation
The UK Cabinet Office’s Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) stands out as perhaps the most successful example of recent rethinking of public policy. Last summer, a new strategic partnership between BIT and Harvard University’s prestigious Kennedy School of Government was launched to link world-class academics with makers of public policy.
Also known as The Nudge Unit, BIT is known for integrating interdisciplinary insights about human decision-making into the rigorous design of highly cost-effective interventions, often challenging the dominant public policy in question.
A number of powerful solutions to wicked problems have become close to famous across the world yet one very important question – in particular for decision-makers within public policy - has received far too little attention so far.
What actually explains the successful establishment and implementation of BIT?
To provide a substantial and instructive answer to that question, PP Platform has invited Professor Peter John from University College London (UCL) and academic affiliate of BIT to give the keynote speak at this seminar. He will, among things, talk about BIT’s willingness to work in a non-hierarchical way, excellent skills at forming alliances, and its ability to form good relationships with expert audiences.
Additionally, Professor John will explain how BIT has been able to promote a more entrepreneurial approach to government by using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as a robust method of policy evaluation challenging old ways of doing business and leading to the redesign of existing administrative systems.
