Professor Cass Sunstein as Honorary Doctor at CBS and ICM

Cass Sunstein is currently the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard and is author of hundreds of articles and essays and has written and edited about 50 books. He is co-author of the bestseller “Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness” (2008) and recently published the books “Simpler: The Future of Government” (2013) and “Wiser: Getting beyond groupthink to make groups smarter (with Reid Hastie, 2014). In March 2013, Cass Sunstein received Harvard’s highest honor for a faculty member, Harvard University Professor, for wide-ranging impact beyond field. 

From 2009 to 2012, he was Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and also serves as advisor to President Barack Obama’s second term in office. At Harvard Law School, Professor Sunstein has founded and directs the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy. He has testified before congressional committees on many subjects, and he has been involved in constitution-making and law reform activities in a number of nations.

Starting in 2012, CBS/ICM has put efforts into developing a strategic research relationship between Cass Sunstein – and herewith, one of the world’s leading higher education institutions, Harvard Law School. The main focus of this collaboration is to investigate and develop behaviorally based “social” regulation (or “behaviorally informed regulation”) particularly in the field of environmental politics and sustainability.

Professor Cass Sunstein also serves as a regular visitor and expert to cbsCSR and the Sustainability Platform where the members benefit from his comprehensive knowledge and experience. His work is also central to the GRB research agenda and will enhance the group’s understanding of the intersections and dynamics between governance making and governance taking across all levels: From micro level studies of individual behavior to macro level discussions of policy-making and standard-setting. Professor Cass Sunstein is already collaborating closely with GRB members Professor Lucia Reisch and Associate Professor Wencke Gwozdz on the European Commission-funded FP7 research project “Nudge-it”, which has the overall aim to better understand decision-making in food choice and to build predictive models to contribute to improving public health policy.
