In order to obtain the PhD degree, Jonathan Harmat has submitted his thesis entitled:
The Affects by which We are Torn:
Four Essays on Government and Affect
Jonathan’s research resides in the intersection between political theory, the history of philosophy, and organizational studies. His dissertation – The Affects by which We are Torn: Four essays on Government and Affect – aims to expand our current understanding of governmentality by exploring and substantiating a distinct affective register of governmentality. To corroborate the relationship between government and affect, the study takes its point of departure in Foucault’s history of governmentality and contends that Spinoza’s political philosophy of affect furnishes the focal point for a novel articulation of governing individuals through their desires and affects. By reconstructing particular governmental problematics in each of Spinoza’s mature works, each of the dissertation’s four essays generates new insights for social, political, and organizational theories of affect.
