China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries

Guest lecture with Assistant Professor Carmen Amado Mendes, the University of Coimbra

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 - 10:00 to 12:00

On May 8, ARC hosts a guest lecture titled 'China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries' with Assistant Professor Carmen Amado Mendes from the University of Coimbra.

Despite being connected by language and culture within an inter-governmental organization—the Community of Portuguese Language Speaking Countries (CPLP)—the lusophone world is a very heterogeneous group of countries, spread over four continents and experiencing different stages of political and economic development. Thus, their relationship with China has different characteristics as well. All lusophone leaders acknowledge bilateral channels as the most important ones, but multilateralism is perceived as a very useful tool to increase cooperation and mutual understanding as bilateral interaction with China is not yet well developed. This is highlighted by their commitment to the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries. This Forum was created by China’s Ministry of Commerce in 2003, with a permanent secretariat based in Macau, the only Chinese region where Portuguese is an official language. Beijing has used this Special Administrative Region after the handover from Portuguese administration in 1999 as a platform for cooperation with other Portuguese ex-colonies.
