CBS Maritime hosted the two days executive training program, which gathered key port management researchers and decision-makers and policy-makers in shipping and the port industries.

Director of CBS Maritime, Henrik Sornn-Friese states that the seminar brought state-of-art academic research on ports to life and used them in conversation with executives, who did not always agree.

- The seminar challenged practitioners with thought provoking ideas. One claim made was that ports around the world suffer from a dated mindset and an outspoken lack of commercial thinking. So, based on academic research, would it be fair to say that it is time, for example, to do away with thinking in terms of “port authority" and instead start apprehending port development on commercial, market-based grounds, asks Henrik Sornn-Friese.

Questioning practical experiences and debating current strategic industry issues was the focus of the seminar’s concluding Industry Session, which had lively presentations by Deputy Director Peter Olsen from the

Danish Shipowners' Association and CEO Johan Röstin from Copenhagen Malmö Port.

- It is an important target of ours that CBS´s maritime research and related activities continuously address the needs and challenges of the industry. The Port Executive Seminar proved a way to fruitfully discuss our research with practitioners and receive input on how to move forward and develop new research projects that enables the industry to better reflect on its major challenges and opportunities, says Henrik Sornn-Friese.

Henrik Sornn-Friese and Associate Professor René Taudal Poulsen (CBS)  presented their current joint research on energy efficiency in shipping and ports.
