UNESCO accreditation but so what? A politicized place branding strategy in Malaysia
Abstract
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a globally recognized brand. While its primary aim is to conserve global heritage, the scheme has taken more meanings and have drawn contrasting responses. In this presentation, we look at two UNESCO Heritage Sites, Georgetown and Melaka in Malaysia. We answer two questions. The first is how the cities UNESCO recognitions are transforming these historic sites. The second is how diverse stakeholders negotiate, persuade and compete with each other in their interpretations of the “World Heritage” title to serve their own agendas.
Key words: UNESCO accreditation, place branding, World Heritage Site, conservation, image, experience

Increased international collaboration in higher education for fine visual arts: a cultural sociological perspective
Abstract
The paper aims to investigate the globalization of culture and the arts, from a cultural sociological perspective of the individual artist in the case of international collaborations between higher arts education in China & Denmark. I.e. two academies of fine visual arts located in Copenhagen (DK) and Xiamen (CN).
The local arena of the two academies, in regards to the cultures concerning the artistic vocation, are at one time very different and in other senses quite similar. Relating to e.g. what is a successful artist, how does he practice his art, what is real fine art, what is the role of art in society.
Through a theoretical framework inspired by Ann Swidler’s (2001) theory on cultural repertoires - codes, contexts and institutions, I seek to draw out the implications of such collaborations at the individual level, and through this unfold the implications for such collaborations on an international level.
The paper aims to contribute to current research on globalization of culture and the arts as part of the field of cultural globalization. Therefore, on a conceptual level, the ambition is to unfold the relation between ‘global’ and ‘local’ cultures at play in the art student’s experience and use of cultural meaning in the development of their vocational identity.
This is sought done through uncovering not just the similarities and differences in seemingly familiar forms of cultural objects (art forms, artistic practices etc.) but by studying culture from the perspective of the individual agent in a particular cultural arena, and hereby investigate the way that ‘global’ meaning is subverted into local contexts (and possibly vice versa).
