Velux Visiting Professor: Ian Hunter (Velux Ian Hunter)

Abstract:

Professor Hunter is a leading historian of early modern political thought, in particular of ‘sovereignty’ and ‘office’. His work has had a significant influence on debates not only in history but in the wider social and human sciences, not least as a result of his Australian Professorial Fellowship devoted to an intellectual history of contemporary social and cultural thought. He has also played an important role in contemporary public debate in Australia concerning public service reform, security measures in the light of the threats from international jihadist terrorism, and the continuing significance of sovereign authority in liberal democratic politics.
