Workshop: Contemporary Latin American Politics

From the left turn to the Decolonial Option: Conceptualizing Current Latin America

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 00:00

This workshop seeks to create a deeper understanding of the current trends in Latin American politics with special regards to the so-called ‘Left Turn’ and, to discuss Danish relations with Latin America in the light of this political situation.

The first part of the workshop – an analysis of current trends in Latin American politics – will focus on the differences and similarities between moderate and radical left currents and on the role of national-popular (or populist) discourse. Furthermore, the role of the nation and nation-state as economic, political and symbolic resource will be a focal point. For the last part, we invite a representative of the Danish Foreign Ministry and a representative of a Danish NGO. This part of the discussion will focus on the consequences of national politics in Latin America as well as regional and international (including inter-American) relations for Denmark’s attitude toward and relations to Latin America and the Latin American nations.

The workshop is primarily aimed at journalists, functionaries from Danish NGOs and state-institutions working on Latin America, but participants from other fields and countries are welcome.

From the Left Turn to the Decolonial Option: Conceptualizing Latin America

The Workshop is part of an International Symposium organized in corporation with Roskilde University and the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims. It takes place over four days: May 20-23, 2008:

May 20th: Symposium:
Latin America - An Emerging New Academic and Political Landscape (Rosklide University)

May21st: Workshop:
Contemporary Latin American Politics (Copenhagen Business School)

May 22nd: Workshop:
Citizenship and governance at the Margens of State: Latin America between Post-conflict and Neo-populism (RCT)

May 23rd: PhD Workshop: Call for Abstracts (Rosklide University)

This event is motivated by the challenges that the recent series of political events in Latin America, also conceptualised as the Left Turn, pose both in a political and in an academic realm. These events, spearheaded by the election of Brazilian president Ignacio Lula da Silva, Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, and the first Aymara Bolivian president, Evo Morales, have inaugurated a watershed of political change which seems to require a revision of established scientific approaches to understand Latin America in a global, regional, national and sub-national perspective.

The primary aim of the symposium and workshops on Latin America’s Left Turn is to strengthen the communication and collaboration among Latin America scholars in Denmark. We expect this event to be the first in a series of events, thus paving the way for developing further discussions within a scholarly Latin America Network in Denmark. Furthermore, the aim is to establish a framework for cooperation and knowledge exchange with these leading figures in Latin American social sciences and humanities - who will be visiting Denmark for the first time.
