3,200 new master's students
More applicants and more rejections in the master's programmes compared to 2011
A total of 3,169 new students are taking up a master's programme at CBS in September. 2 per cent more students have received an admissions letter this year. This year showed 13 per cent more applicants for the master's programmes compared to last year, but the number of rejected students has also increased from approximately 3 out of 10 to 4 out of 10.
Programmes in finance the most popular
The recent years have showed an increasing interest in the master's programmes in finance. This is also the case this year. Finance and Strategic Management has received by far the largest number of applications. It was the first priority of 539 applicants. The Applied Economics and Finance concentration has also attracted a lot of applicants this year.
Anne Mette Hou, Head of Admissions, says that the number of applicants has reached a record high this time.
- Because of the huge number of applicants for the MSc EBA programmes, we have been compelled to use selection criteria to distribute the study places between them. There have been too many well qualified applicants compared to the number of vacant study places, which means that we unfortunately have had to disappoint even more applicants, says Anne Mette Hou.
Teaching quality is the most important
In line with the programmes in finance, the MSc in Business Economics and Auditing has experienced a massive increase in the number of applications - 50 per cent. According to Anne Mette Hou, a part of the increase can be caused by the fact that the programme will have entry requirements next year. The entry requirements are introduced in order to be able to guarantee the same high teaching quality in the years to come.
According to Henrik Sornn-Friese, Academic Director of the MSc EBA, the quality of the teaching is more important than the number of students.
- We are not creating new concentrations without ensuring that we are able to provide competent CBS researchers with expertise in the specific field to teach the students. Quality before quantity. I'd rather raise the standards, impose higher entry requirements and reject some of the applicants, says Henrik Sornn-Friese.
CBS is currently undergoing recruitment for researchers and lecturers, who are to strengthen research, provide more research-based teaching and more teaching hours, especially to master's students.
