Background

Since the inception of the UN Global Compact sponsored initiative Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) in 2007, there has been increased debate over how to adapt management education to best meet the demands of the 21st century business environment. Consensus has been reached by the majority of globally focused management programs that sustainability must be incorporated, and the relevant question is no longer why management education should change, but how to change.

PRME has grown to include over 370 participants that represent a truly global spread of many of the most advanced and consolidated management schools. PRME offers a framework for change through adoption of the Principles, regular submission of “Sharing Information on Progress” (SIP) reports, engagement in PRME Working Groups, and participation in regional and global meetings such as the PRME Global Forum.

Invitation to participate in a pioneering project

While the PRME initiative is set to increase to 1,000 participants by 2015, it is equally important for PRME to cultivate actively engaged participants. Therefore, the next step is for current participants to create an effective learning community. For this purpose, the PRME Secretariat is preparing an “Inspirational Guide for the Implementation of PRME” to be presented at the 3rd PRME Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro, 29-30 May 2012. The Guide intends to answer the most frequently asked question concerning the implementation of PRME, by highlighting real world examples of the Principles in practice. Rather than an academic exercise, the Guide seeks to inspire further integration of PRME by highlighting practical examples of participating management schools.
