Thanks for the collaboration
Copenhagen Business School and the Briefing (Orientering), P1 Radio Station
Seven finance experts from CBS have, in the past six months, been attached to the Briefing’s editorial team at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), where they have merged financial matters with current perspectives: From the privatisation of the Faroe Islands’ banking system to tax proposals and the conditions of women as entrepreneurs in developing nations.
Breaking news stories
Many topics have been prepared in good time, while other stories, such as when a major financial initiative is anticipated, mean that the CBS employees have to be ready and available on any given day to quickly help produce the story in the studio. This has been a time of finance laws and tax and welfare proposals, so there have been many opportunities to respond to breaking news stories.
Both sides have thrown themselves enthusiastically into the project, which was new for both the economists and the radio editorial staff. The idea of this untraditional collaboration was to tap the experts’ highly-specialised knowledge and adapt it so that it would work for radio. The ideas were discussed in a weekly editorial meeting at CBS, where a staff member from the radio station helped to suggest angles and categorize the proposals.
Specialised knowledge wrapped up in a journalistic style
CBS and the Briefing agree that it has been a very positive collaboration, which has resulted in a series of features within an incredibly wide range of financial subjects. At the same time, both parties had to acknowledge that it is time consuming to cross the barriers between highly-specialised financial knowledge and the expected journalistic form and communication standards.
Both CBS and the Briefing would like to say thank you for the collaboration, the openness, and the great effort that has been made on both sides.
