The Rise of China – A Paradigm Shift

Guest lecture with the author of the global bestseller "When China Rules the World", Martin Jacques

Friday, October 24, 2014 - 13:30 to 15:00

On October 24, Asia Research Centre, are proud to welcome Martin Jacques, the author of the global bestseller When China Rules the World, who will give the lecture "The Rise of China - A Paradigm Shift

The rise of China will have profound ramifications on the modern world. There are two main reasons: it is so populous and it is so different. If the demographic factor is relatively obvious, the difference is not. We are so habituated to thinking in terms of the dominance of the West that we think it will be always so. Indeed, many still believe that China will in time become a Western-style society. It will not. It will remain profoundly different. As China rises, it will change the world not only by virtue of its size but also its difference. Think Sinicisation rather than Westernisation. Nor should we expect China, as a global power, to be a mirror image of what the US has been.

Martin Jacques is the author of the global best-seller When China Rules the World: the End of the Western World and the Birth of a New Global Order (2009, greatly expanded and fully updated 2012). He is a Senior Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies, Cambridge University, and a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing. He took his doctorate while at King’s College, Cambridge.
