Corporate Control and Governance in India, 2011
Second ICCR-CBS Lecture by ICCR Visiting Professor, Dr. Sushil Khanna
The Government of India through its Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) supports a Visiting Professor at the Asia Research Centre, Copenhagen Business School on an annual rotating basis. Prof. Sushil Khanna, the 2nd ICCR Visiting Professor will deliver the second ICCR – CBS lecture, titled “Corporate Control and Governance in India 1975-2010”
Sushil Khanna discusses the new forms of Corporate Control and Governance against the background of changing Indian business environment – from one of ‘socialist’ goals to celebrating the expansion and internationalization of large private firms. In contrast to the western situation, where the issue of corporate governance is seen as a problem of controlling managers, the bulk of business in India (and in other Asian countries) because they are family owned and managed raise several new issues of control and governance. Khanna argues that concentrated family ownership mitigates some of the problems of governance but raises new ones.
The presentation will focus on the Indian situation, which demonstrates a dramatic shift in the way owners/promoters of companies exercise control and the impact it has on Corporate Governance and international expansion of Indian firms.
The discussion focuses on the specificity of the Indian variety of capitalism, and its changing form, under the forces of globalization.
Sushil Khanna is the 2nd Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR)-CBS Visiting Professor at the Asia Research Centre. He is a Professor of Economics and Strategic Management at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, where he has taught for last 25 years.
