Professor Marina Papanastassiou holds a Chair in International Business at the Department of International Business and at the Centre for International Business University of Leeds (CIBUL) at the University of Leeds, UK.  Professor Papanastassiou is currently Visiting Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Frederiksberg, Denmark and Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. Professor Papanastassiou held previously professorships at Middlesex University, Hendon, UK (2012 – 2019) and at Copenhagen Business School, Frederiksberg, Denmark (Professor MSO, 2007 – 2012) including various visiting appointments in universities globally such as a  Visiting Professorship at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar between January 2022 – June 2023.

She has a BSc in Economics from the Department of Economics at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece and an MSc in International Business and Economic Integration from the Department of Economics, at the University of Reading, Reading, UK. She earned her PhD in International Business at the Department of Economics at the University of Reading, Reading, UK in 1995. 

Professor Papanastassiou's research focuses on the international R&D strategies of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs); the impact of MNEs’ Global Value Chains (GVCs) on sustainability (SDGs) whilst she is currently involved in projects on global R&D and geopolitics; cultivated meat and its impact on climate change and food security; cocoa GVC in Africa among others. She has published extensively in academic journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business  and Research Policy, among others. She co-authored (with Robert Pearce) two books on “The strategic development of Multinationals; subsidiaries and innovation”, London: Palgrave MacMillan (2009) and on “Multinationals, Technology and National Competitiveness”, London: Edward Elgar Press (1999) whilst she edited with Emeritus Professor George Mergos a book on “Food Security and Sustainability: Investment and Financing along Agro-Food Chains”, London: Palgrave MacMillan (2017).  She has co-edited special issues for Management International Review, Transnational Corporations and Critical Perspectives on International Business. 

She is reviewing regularly for the vast majority of the IB related -subject journals and a significant  number of ABS 4*-3 economics, strategy,  management and innovation journals. She is currently at the Editorial Review Board of the International Business Review whilst in the past she served at the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of International Business Studies.

Since 2011 Professor Papanastassiou is a Fellow of the European International Business Academy (EIBA) and since 2022, the co-Chair of EIASM Danny van Den Bulcke Doctoral Symposium.
